For network operators running Juniper MX platforms, the path to more bandwidth does not always require the newest line card. The secondary market is making that especially clear with the MPC5E-100G10G, a fixed-port MPC that can add two 100GbE interfaces and four 10GbE interfaces to an existing MX at a fraction of the cost of an MPC7E-MRATE.
That makes the MPC5E-100G10G worth another look for operators who need practical 100G capacity without turning a straightforward bandwidth upgrade into a major capital project.
Juniper built the MPC5E-100G10G around two 100GbE ports plus four 10GbE ports, with line-rate throughput up to 240 Gbps. Its sibling, the MPC5E-40G10G, delivers six 40GbE ports and twenty-four 10GbE ports, also with up to 240 Gbps of line-rate throughput.
The 100G model is the obvious headline today. It provides a relatively inexpensive way to bring 100GbE into MX240, MX480, MX960 and supported MX2000-series environments. But the 40G version should not be dismissed. Forty gigabit Ethernet is still deeply installed across service provider, hosting and data center networks, and the ability to combine 40G with substantial 10G connectivity can make the MPC5E-40G10G an efficient capacity or replacement card.

The economics are hard to ignore. MPC7E-MRATE cards provide substantially greater flexibility and twice the maximum line-rate throughput, but that flexibility comes at a much higher secondary-market cost. When the requirement is simply to add one or two 100G links to an existing MX chassis, an MPC5E-100G10G can accomplish the job for a fraction of the price.
Optics reinforce that value proposition. The MPC5E-100G10G uses CFP2 interfaces for its 100G ports. Compatible 100G LR4 optics are readily available on the secondary market, making the complete 100G upgrade surprisingly approachable.
The MPC7E-MRATE is the more capable card. Juniper rates it for up to 480 Gbps line-rate throughput, compared with 240 Gbps for the MPC5E. It also provides twelve multi-rate ports, with four capable of 100GbE, and offers much more flexibility when mixing 10G, 40G and 100G connections.
That flexibility matters in higher-density deployments, major refreshes and networks that expect rapid interface growth. If those capabilities are required, the MPC7E is the appropriate tool.
But many upgrades are much simpler. If the requirement is two 100G interfaces, paying for unused density and flexibility may not make economic sense. The MPC5E-100G10G lets operators match the hardware investment to the actual requirement.
The MPC5E-40G10G makes a similar argument for installed 40G networks. Juniper supports configurations of six 40GbE ports, twenty-four 10GbE ports, or a mixed configuration of three 40GbE and twelve 10GbE ports. That flexibility can be useful for maintaining existing aggregation, peering or transport connections while preserving plenty of 10G capacity.
Networks do not refresh according to marketing calendars. If an existing 40G architecture is meeting its operational requirements, there can be real value in expanding or maintaining it rather than replacing it prematurely.
The MPC5E family is not a replacement for every newer MPC. It is an example of why network operators should evaluate requirements before automatically buying the newest generation.
For existing MX environments, the MPC5E-100G10G can deliver a straightforward jump to 100G at a fraction of the cost of an MPC7E. The MPC5E-40G10G remains a useful option for networks with significant 40G and 10G requirements. Both can extend the productive life of infrastructure already in the rack while keeping upgrade budgets under control.
Terabit Systems currently has quantities of both MPC5E-100G10G and MPC5E-40G10G cards in testing, along with compatible 100G LR4 optics. Our refurbished hardware is tested and backed by a one-year replacement warranty, and keeping spares in stock can make replacement considerably faster when downtime matters.
