Juniper Interface Options, often called Line Cards, allow for customization of chassis-based routers’ port configurations. There are four main types of interface options for the Juniper MX line. Below is a brief overview of each

Let’s begin with Modular Port Concentrators or MPCs. The fixed-configuration MPCs feature the advanced Trio chipset and are our customers’ most popular choices. Like the MPC5E-40G10G. MPCs like that support up to 160 Gbps ports per slot. These fixed-configuration MPCs provide higher port density over MICs and combine packet forwarding and Ethernet interfaces in a single line card. Full-width MPCs insert directly into an open slot in the chassis of an MX router.

Modular MPCs are ‘empty’ line cards that accept two half-width MICs (see below) allowing for port customization, especially with legacy setups requiring copper connections. Very popular: the MX-MPC3E-3D.

Next, let’s cover MICs. Modular Interface Cards are installed into MPCs. They provide the physical connection – the ports. A fine example: MIC3-3D-2X40GE-QSFPP. Two MICs can be installed into each MPC, but obviously not the fixed configuration MPCs. As noted above, there is a wide range of MIC port configurations available from 1G to 100G to help you transition from legacy copper to fiber in your network.

Lastly there are DPCs, or Dense Port Concentrators. DPCs came before MPCs and are the first generation of an update to Flexible Port Concentrators (FPCs) supporting up to 80Gbps per slot. DPCs are not recommended for use with MPCs. As they are older and support less throughput, they are a good choice for those on tight budgets. More often than not the port density, throughput, and future-proofing of an MPC will justify the slight stretch in your budget.

Used does not mean less capable. As soon as gear is plugged in it becomes “used”, much like a brand new car driving off the lot.
