MPC5EQ-40G10G as cost-effective alternative to MPC4E-3D-32XGE-SFPP

In the secondary market, supply can often be the determining factor when designing and scaling a network build out.

We recently discussed an example of limited availability of the Juniper MPC4E-3D-32XGE-SFPP with a customer. The 16-port version of this card flooded the market lately, increasing supply and thus ultimately reducing price. Supply of the 32-port version meanwhile has remained constrained and even constricted from last year with prices increasing 30% since Q3 of 2019.

 So, when customers with 10Gbe density requirements request a quote, we often suggest exploring alternatives like the MPC5EQ-40G10G. Boasting 6x40G QSFPP and 24x10G SFPP ports, it currently retails used for close to the same price as the 32x10G MPC4E. While it only has 75% of the 10G port density, it is full line rate compared with the 32x10G which uses intelligent subscription services to help ease traffic congestion at a 3:4 ratio. Effectively the MPC5EQ has the same amount of line rate ports available at any given time. Factor in the scalability of built in 40G ports when the demand arises it becomes a viable alternative for price conscious clients who want the best bang for the buck, with added port speed availability when needed.
