Have you seen your MX240, MX480 or MX960 send out a chassis alarm in regard to temperature warnings or overheating? Yellow alarms and red alarms are an indication your router is exceeding healthy temperature thresholds. Heed this warning and avoid costly damage down the line. To run a check on current temperatures, run the following commands:
show chassis temperature-thresholds
or
show chassis alarms
When it comes to your MX’s cooling system, an inexpensive fan-tray upgrade (FFANTRAY-MX240-HC-S, FFANTRAY-MX480-HC-S, FFANTRAY-MX960-HC-S) or a filter change can save you from thousands of dollars of MPC heat-damage or an even more costly outage. Larger MX series routers have high-capacity fan trays that are absolutely necessary when running MPCs such as MPC-3D-16XGE-SFPP-R-B or other MPCs with 10G, 40G, and 100G port density.
Here’s a quick link to upgrading and installing the high-capacity fan-trays in the MX240, MX480, and MX960.
