1000BASE-SX Multimode SFP Modules

SFP SX modules are designed exclusively for use with multimode fiber (MMF). The 'S' in SX denotes 'short reach,' which is a primary characteristic of multimode connections. For long-distance links, a single-mode fiber module, such as an LX or LH SFP, would be required.

A 1000BASE-SX SFP is a transceiver that conforms to the Gigabit Ethernet standard for short-range communication over multimode fiber. It operates at a data rate of 1 Gbps and is widely used for network backbone applications within buildings or for linking hardware inside a data center.

While often used interchangeably for 1Gbps multimode transceivers, there is a technical distinction. SX specifically refers to the 1000BASE-SX standard for 1Gbps Ethernet. SR (Short Range) is more formally associated with the 10GBASE-SR standard for 10Gbps speeds, though some use it for 1Gbps as well.

The maximum distance depends on the multimode fiber's quality. With older OM1 fiber, the reach may be limited to around 275 meters. However, when paired with modern, higher-grade OM2 or OM3 fiber, a 1000BASE-SX SFP can reliably support link distances of up to 550 meters.
